Experience the Vibrant Bali Arts Festival 2026

The Bali Arts Festival (Pesta Kesenian Bali) has its official run each year from June to July, a whole month long. Held since the late seventies, at heart it was not designed for tourists — it is Balinese putting it on for Balinese; you only happen to be allowed to sit inside.

Because it spans a whole month, with performances, exhibitions and contests taking turns every day, you don't have to rush for any single day. But from my own experience, the opening parade is worth coming specially for. For the exact opening date and the daily programme times, it's best to go by the official announcements and confirm once more before you set out.

The festival's biggest venue is in Bali, concentrated at the arts centre in Denpasar. Each June and July, the island's dance troupes, gamelan ensembles and craftsmen all gather here to perform, exhibit and compete in turn.

As for getting there, the official advice is to use a rental car or public transport. From my experience travelling with my daughter, both crowds and traffic grow heavier during the festival, so transport arrangements should be planned early — don't go looking for a car at the last minute. Factoring in your arrival time will make the whole day far more relaxed.

The opening parade is around ten in the morning, when the processions of each regency walk from the city centre to the arts centre — traditional dress, gamelan, ritual implements, a procession kilometres long passing slowly by.

Holding my daughter's hand at the roadside, the crowd thick, I kept lifting her up and setting her down, afraid she could not see, afraid she would be lost. These years going out, mother and daughter, has always been like this — one hand holding hers, the other having to manage everything alone; yet seeing the light in her eyes, it feels worth it. If you want to see the parade too, arriving early and finding a spot with a clear view makes a big difference.

Very much so. What nailed my daughter to the spot was the Kecak — dozens of men sit in a ring, arms thrown up at once, calling out that intricate "cak, cak, cak" rhythm. No instruments, only voices, and yet the whole space is filled. It is one of Bali's most iconic dances. We had only been passing through with her, and she forgot even to blink.

Inside the arts centre, backstage, a girl of about ten is having her makeup done, the gold headdress bigger than her face. My daughter watched without blinking, and asked me quietly whether she too could one day stand on a stage like that — I said of course, and she smiled, that smile a child gives when a grown-up has answered in earnest. For a child, the sounds, colours and masks here are all alive.

Honestly, an afternoon is not enough to see it all. This pavilion has classical dance, that one a gamelan contest, the workshop on the corner someone carving a mask. Rather than trying to do too much, it's better to pick a few pavilions and settle in to watch slowly.

The gamelan's bronze notes wash over the whole courtyard in waves, muffled and warm, like sound heard from underwater. The air holds incense, frangipani and freshly fried snacks, mixed together, the smell particular to a Balinese afternoon. I'd suggest stringing the morning parade, the afternoon performances and crafts, and the evening square into one line, leaving some gaps for the children to rest.

Because the main venue is concentrated at the arts centre in Denpasar, when it comes to accommodation, staying a little closer to Denpasar makes coming and going far easier — especially since the opening parade means catching the slot around ten in the morning.

If, like me, you're travelling with a child, one less stretch of driving means a little more ease. Plan where you stay, the activities you want to see each day, and the timing of the trips back and forth all together, and the whole journey will go much more smoothly.

Before you set out, it's best to have your ticket purchases and travel timings arranged. Put the key activities you want to see, how to buy tickets, and the to-and-fro times into your schedule together, and you won't be caught scrambling on the spot.

As for whether every show needs advance booking and what the ticket prices are, it's safer to go by the official announcements for this part, and check the latest information once more before you set out. Estimate transport, accommodation and tickets — the three together — and the outline of your costs will become clear.

June to July is Bali's dry season, with warmer temperatures, well suited to sightseeing. For clothing, it's best to choose light clothes suited to a tropical climate and avoid too much sun exposure.

Watching the parade outdoors during the day, moving around the arts centre in the afternoon — you're in the sun for a fair while, so a light, breathable, sun-shading outfit is the most practical. If you're bringing children, having an extra set ready for them brings peace of mind too.

Remember that this is a festival the Balinese put on for the Balinese — you are a guest allowed to sit inside. When watching the parade and the performances, staying quiet and respecting the performers on stage and the ritual implements is the most basic attitude.

As for crowds, the day of the opening parade is the densest, with people all along a procession kilometres long. That day I kept lifting my daughter up and setting her down; holding on to the child and watching out for getting separated was what I cared about most. Arriving early and choosing a good spot can spare you a lot of panic.

Daytime is good for the morning parade and the afternoon performances and crafts; if you want to see the formal stage performances, it's recommended to watch in the slot from seven in the evening into the night.

The gamelan and dance at night, set against the incense and lights in the courtyard, have an atmosphere quite different from the daytime. When planning your itinerary, you can leave a stretch for both day and night, and the experience will be more complete.

We stayed in the arts centre a whole afternoon, and coming out the sun was already low, the Balinese dusk washing square, palms and people all the same orange. My daughter was tired, slumped on my back, her weight heavy, her breathing steady.

I did not mean to take photos, nor was I in a hurry to go, only wanting to carry her and stand a while longer — these years most of the road has been mine to walk with her alone, yet this afternoon dyed orange by the setting sun we saw together. What this place shows is the richness of Balinese culture and art: dance, gamelan, masks, food and dress, all crammed into the same month. I think if you too bring a child here, you will likely be loath to walk out of that orange too soon.
